What is Bazi (Four Pillars of Destiny)?

Bazi, literally Eight Characters, is a Chinese natal chart system over two thousand years old. It maps the year, month, day and hour of birth to four pillars made of Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches, revealing the Five-Element constitution of a person and the cycles of luck unfolding through life.

What is a Kua number?

Your Kua number is a single digit from 1 to 9 derived from your birth year and gender. It maps you to one of the eight trigrams and identifies four directions favourable to you (for prosperity, health, love, career) and four directions to avoid.

What is Qi Men Dun Jia?

Qi Men Dun Jia, the Mysterious Gates Hidden Stems, is a classical Chinese system used historically by military strategists and statesmen to choose the right time and direction for important actions. Each chart is generated from a precise moment in time and reads the configuration of stars, gates and deities at that instant.

How is this different from Western astrology?

Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac and the positions of planets in twelve signs. Chinese metaphysics is built on the Five Elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water), the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches, and the lunisolar calendar. The two systems share almost no underlying mechanics. Chinese metaphysics is also explicitly used for action and timing, not only personality description.

Is the Sanctuary app free?

Yes. The core daily reading, Kua directions and basic compatibility are free. Full reports, additional profiles and premium features are available through optional paid unlocks or membership.

What data we collect

Email address (when you sign up, purchase, or leave your email on the landing).
Date of birth, optional time and city of birth (required for BaZi calculations — without them the app cannot personalize).
Partner/family names and birth dates (only those you choose to enter).
Device identifier (anonymous UUID generated in your browser — used to keep your session).
Payment data (processed by Stripe; we never see your card number).
Anonymous analytics (page views, UTM parameters — via Plausible, no cookies, GDPR-compliant).

Send occasional newsletter (max once per month — you can opt out any time from any email).

Data retention

Data is encrypted in transit (TLS) and at rest. Access is limited to authorized personnel on a need-to-know basis. We follow industry best practices for web application security.

Children

This service is not directed to children under 16. If you believe a minor has registered without parental consent, contact us and we'll delete the account immediately.

Why Chinese metaphysics

Chinese metaphysics is the world's oldest continuously-practised decision-support system. It is mathematical, not mystical: every chart is derived deterministically from a birth moment and a calendar. Bazi has guided life decisions in East Asia for over two millennia. Qi Men Dun Jia was the system Zhuge Liang and other classical strategists used to choose the timing and direction of military campaigns. Until now, accessing this knowledge required either years of study or paying €100–€500 per private consultation. Sanctuary computes the same charts automatically and explains them in plain English.
